While the use of mobile devices is always growing, certain risks come with it. Smartphones advance us in plenty of ways. They connect with other devices or messages, but even with powerful technology it still deals with hacking and malware.
Whether for professional or personal reasons, mobile security is extremely important. Considering the type of information stored on a smartphone or tablet, the need to keep it safe is crucial. To help with this, we’ve put together a few tips to help prevent mobile attacks, be it virus, person, or simple mistake.
Multiple Passwords
It starts with the basics. There’s no easier way to keep your data protected than with passwords. However, it’s important to have multiple logins for various accounts. Yes, it can be tricky keeping up with all of them. But, if someone was able to compromise one of your passwords, and you use it universally, they have access to all your accounts.
For unlocking the phone, logging into apps, social media, company networks, and whatever else, it’s good to have complex, various passwords.
Checking for Malware Apps
Like a nasty bug on your computer, malware can infect tablets and smartphones too. If you notice an unfamiliar app on your phone or device, see that your data usage has suddenly increased, or perhaps battery life is draining faster, you’ve likely got malware.
Double check your downloads and check through what’s currently installed. If something looks suspicious, remove it.
Up to Date Apps
Use the latest version of an app. Old versions of software don’t have the same protections as the latest version. Hackers routinely exploit weaknesses in programs to bypass them, so be sure you have everything updated.
Keep Anti-Virus Installed
Though it might not feel necessary, anti-virus is a big benefit to all mobile devices. Most free programs have versions for smartphones too. This will keep your device safe from plenty of common malware strikes. It also gives you an option to conduct scans for strange or improperly installed bugs.
Practice Scrutiny
Nothing is more effective than a little personal scrutiny over strange or mysterious links, names, or websites. Malicious third parties often rely on common human error by ignoring dangerous links to sites.
Whenever you see an email or message which contains an unfamiliar name, address or web link, it’s best to play it safe. Even if the message makes alarming claims such as “your bank account has a problem,” this is likely a phishing scam. It’s a form of social engineering to trick the person into inputting login information or otherwise accidentally giving away personal data.
Remember, but whether it’s for business or personal reasons, these basic tips are essential to any strong security policy. Remember them well and you’ll always keep your devices safe, no matter what they’re used for.
